Austin Safety Alert: Hot cars killing more kids in 2016
Major media outlets like CNN, and local Austin TV stations, as well as the Austin American Statesman, have begun warning parents and caregivers about the heat. By the 19th of June, 13 children had died in hot cars nationwide. Only four children had died in hot cars across the country by this time last June. 2016 is shaping up to be a record year for these tragic little deaths.
Children can die in minutes in 70 degree temperatures even with the windows cracked and the car parked in the shade! Winter temperatures in Austin can be deadly too for children left in cars. Parents and caregivers in Texas Capital city – where snow and freezing temperatures are rare – need to be aware that kids can die of heat stroke there year round.
A 13-month old Georgia boy died in 52 degree weather in a hot car on the 12th of January, 2016! The average high for Austin in January in 2016 was 63 degrees Fahrenheit – a potentially deadly temperature for children locked in cars.
To protect kids from fatal or serious injuries in a car accident, they must be buckled in a car seat in the back seat. Distracted parents and caregivers can easily forget them as they head into the office or the grocery store.
Children fall asleep easily in cars. So they may not make a sound as a parent – possibly the one who rarely drops them off at daycare – parks the car, locks it and walks away. It happens more frequently than most people imagine.
Who leaves kids in hot cars?
- Anybody can forget a child in the car. “In more than 54% of cases, the person responsible for the child’s death unknowingly or accidentally left the child in the car. In more than 30% of the cases a child got into the car on their own.” A federal fact sheet with terrific tips can help you avoid these awful tragedies.
- The “Where’s Baby? Look Before you Lock” website also has simple ways for Austin parents and caregivers to avoid these entirely preventable deaths.
